Lately I've been visiting Sembawang Music, a music shop that I've been frequenting since I was in school. They started out with a small shop in Sembawang shopping centre way back before the internet became a part of our lives.
I remember back then that music was spread through word of mouth and I also relied on a local magazine called BigO (Before I get Old) for news and releases on the indie and alternative music scene. And Sembawang shopping centre was one of the places where we could source out bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Ministry, KMFDM, Danzig amongst others before Tower and HMV opened in Singapore. That shopping centre was located in what some would call the boondocks as it was in the outskirts of the city nearer to a residential area but it had a lot of small CD shops selling imported stuff. However, the most prominent one was Sembawang music which later went on to open outlets in the city.
There were also several shops like Da Da Records, Chua Joo Huat and Roxy where you could get your fix of underground and alternative music which were also often parallel imported from the US or Europe. Chua Joo Huat had an awesome range of bootleg CDs if you digged live recordings.
Today, most of these local CD shops have gone because people buy less CDs nowadays as compared to before. Both Da Da and CJH have long since closed while Roxy is still around but relocated to some place hidden. Recently, Sembawang music has been the latest casualty as they are slowly closing down all their outlets.
And why am I rambling about this? Probably because I've been talking to my supervisor at work about it all week as he too used to frequent Sembawang music for his metal fix plus my colleagues and I have been visitng some of their outlets before the shutters go down for good. Sadly, it looks like I will have to resort to ordering from Amazon more frequently as our local HMV charges an arm and a leg for imported metal/punk/industrial stuff.
Damn! There goes my reliable music source!
